CliniComp PACS Viewer FDA clearance puts imaging in the EHR

The CliniComp PACS Viewer FDA clearance, announced on July 7, 2026, is a 510(k) clearance that lets clinicians view, manipulate and analyze diagnostic-quality images directly inside the San Diego company's New Era EHR. The FDA database records the decision on April 23, 2026, with the viewer cleared as a Medical Image Management and Processing System. For hospitals, it targets a daily task: switching between separate PACS and EHR systems to read a scan alongside the patient's record.

What problem the PACS Viewer is meant to solve

Hospitals have long kept medical images and patient records in different systems. CliniComp says imaging workflows have traditionally required clinicians to move between a separate PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) and the electronic health record. The company says its viewer removes that divide, which it says speeds clinical decisions and reduces workflow disruption.

"Healthcare organizations have spent decades managing separate clinical, imaging, and administrative systems." — Chris Haudenschild, CEO of CliniComp, on the clearance

What the FDA cleared

The FDA cleared the device under 510(k) number K254237. The agency's database lists it as the CCI PACS VIEWER (PACS-US-001), classified as a radiological image processing system under regulation number 892.2050, product code LLZ, and reviewed by the radiology panel.

The FDA received the submission on December 29, 2025, and decided on April 23, 2026, finding the device substantially equivalent. The summary is a traditional 510(k), and the record shows it was not reviewed by a third party. CliniComp announced the clearance on July 7, 2026.

How the viewer works inside the patient chart

The viewer runs inside CliniComp's New Era EHR with Native AI Solution Suite rather than as a separate program. Physicians can view, manipulate and analyze diagnostic images directly within the patient chart, with advanced image processing in the same place.

CliniComp lists four capabilities. Diagnostic imaging with high-fidelity viewing and processing sits within the EHR. Imaging studies appear alongside patient history, laboratory results, medications and vital signs. AI-powered documentation and workflow automation run throughout the platform. And the system automatically identifies and prioritizes high-acuity studies using real-time clinical context.

Where the AI fits

CliniComp's Native AI is meant to connect an image with the rest of the record. The company says the platform can correlate imaging studies with laboratory results, vital signs, medications and patient history to help clinicians prioritize critical cases and make more informed decisions at the point of care.

Who CliniComp sells to and how

CliniComp says it has over 42 years in healthcare IT. It sells its EHR through a System as a Service (SYaaS) model, which it says delivers rapid deployment and all-inclusive support and eliminates cost ambiguity.

Much of its recent work is with the Department of Veterans Affairs. On August 6, 2025, it announced that VISN 6 had expanded the CliniComp EHR to medical-surgical units, and on July 28, 2026, it announced a new VA Salem contract for critical care. In a survey the company released on March 24, 2026, nearly 90% of health IT leaders said vendor consolidation is crucial to their interoperability strategy.

What it changes for hospitals and imaging teams

For a hospital, the task the viewer handles is reading an image in the context of the patient, without switching systems. CliniComp says the result is faster access to information and a foundation for AI-enabled care delivery, and that automated prioritization can bring high-acuity studies forward.

The company gave no measured results with the clearance: no time saved per study, no cost figures and no customer counts for the viewer. Hospitals weighing it would need to measure those gains in their own workflows. For health systems trying to reduce the number of vendors they manage, one platform for records and imaging is the main appeal.

Questions and answers

What is the CliniComp PACS Viewer cleared for?

It is cleared as a Medical Image Management and Processing System, allowing diagnostic-quality image viewing and advanced image processing within CliniComp's EHR. The FDA classifies it as a radiological image processing system.

When did the FDA clear the CliniComp PACS Viewer?

The FDA received the 510(k) submission on December 29, 2025, and issued its decision on April 23, 2026. CliniComp announced the clearance on July 7, 2026.

How does the PACS Viewer use AI?

CliniComp's Native AI correlates imaging studies with laboratory results, vital signs, medications and patient history, and automatically flags high-acuity studies so clinicians can review urgent cases first.

How we would build it

Medical imaging is one of the places where software helps hospitals most, because the work is high in volume and the order of reading matters. A scan that shows something urgent is worth more if a radiologist sees it first. If we were building the prioritization part of a system like this, we would start with the worklist: every study waiting to be read, with the lab results, medications and vital signs already in the patient record next to it.

A model would score each study for urgency and move the likely urgent ones up the list. It would never hide a study or close one. A radiologist would read every scan, and each time a flagged study turned out routine, or a routine one turned out urgent, that case would go back to the team that tunes the model.

It would break where the record is incomplete. A patient who arrives without recent labs or with an old medication list gives the model less to work with, and the score would look more certain than it is. We would show the missing data next to the score. The one metric we would watch is the time from scan to first read for studies that turn out urgent. Next, we would build a short summary of the relevant history that opens with the image, so the reader does not have to search the chart.
